Any suggestions for trails or areas for a person with limited walking ability? My mother in law has knee issues and can walk for 30 minutes or an hour as long as the trail is not rough. I am looking for paved or concrete nature trails or boardwalks, or accessible areas. My recollection is that Laurel Falls might work, Newfound gap parking area and Clingmas Dome, but could not remember whether the various nature trails might be handicap accessible as well.

also, are Cades Cove and Clingmans ...

My family and I will vacationing in the Great Smoky Mountains October 14-21, 2009. We will have six-(6) full days to enjoy the area. I am the only hiker/backpacker in the bunch. Out of those 6 full days, I plan to hike at least 2, maybe 3 days. I know the basic rule of hiking/backpacking is to not go solo. I have some hiking and backpacking experience in my area (South MS). I understand that hiking 5 miles in relatively flat area is not the same as 5 miles in the mountains. I have done some solo ...

Three of us spent 2 nights at campsite #13 just down from Gregory Bald on June 29-30. After two dayhikes to see the azaleas in each of the last two years, I wanted to go up there and have an entire day to just wander around (or lay around!) and soak it all up. Mission accomplished!

We didn't get on the Gregory Bald trail out of Sam's Gap on Parsons Branch Road until almost 6PM. Then about halfway up one of our group who was out ahead of the other two rounded a bend and startled mama bear ...

Did this one (one of my favorites) yesterday with a friend. Starting from the hikers' parking area at Abrams Creek ranger station, we hiked to and thru the campground, then a little ways out Cooper Road before turning onto Little Bottoms. I managed to do the steep climb up that ridge right at the start without stopping, which is always my goal on that stretch; note that I didn't say I did it quickly! Had a pleasant conversation with a gentleman from Pennsylvania, then another with a man at ...

My husband and I are going to the SM this weekend. We have been there twice before but this will be the first time that we are doing some backcountry hiking. We were looking into doing a 3 day/2 night hike along the Maddron Bald Loop does anyone have any advice, suggestions or comments that can be helpful? Also, I've read several places that pets (dogs) are not allowed on the trails, is this true?

My wife and I are planning a trip to Smoky Mts. Nat'l Park for the third week of June. We are staying for 4 days and want to do some backpacking and hiking. We always stay at the primitive camping sites whenever we take our camping trips. Just wondering if anyone had any advice as to where we should camp, hike and what activities would be fun. From my initial research, looks like some great, great hiking options and a lot of waterfalls to check out. Any information that someone could provide ...
