Any suggestions for trails or areas for a person with limited walking ability? My mother in law has knee issues and can walk for 30 minutes or an hour as long as the trail is not rough. I am looking for paved or concrete nature trails or boardwalks, or accessible areas. My recollection is that Laurel Falls might work, Newfound gap parking area and Clingmas Dome, but could not remember whether the various nature trails might be handicap accessible as well.

also, are Cades Cove and Clingmans ...

I saw on the NPS website that Cades Cove Road, Roaring Fork, and Clingmans Dome road are all closed this spring for construction. Does anyone have any updates confirming that? I have a spring break trip planned and we are staying on the north side. My specific questions are can I access the Cades Cove nature trail? what about Laurel Falls trail?

We have made trips to Yellowstone for the past three years, and our whole family loves it there. Since we live in Maryland we would like to have somewhere that is closer to home between trips to YNP. Here is our quandry..........have we been too spoiled by our trips to YNP, and all the wildlife sightings there, to enjoy any where else? Thoughts and opinions please.

Well the Park Service finally announced the plan for the repaving of the Cades Cove Loop Road, next spring. While I had been told this from reliable sources I decided to wait until it was in print ..... The cove will essentially be closed from March 1 thru May 2010. It was determined that this would be the fastest schedule to get the work done.

My family and I will vacationing in the Great Smoky Mountains October 14-21, 2009. We will have six-(6) full days to enjoy the area. I am the only hiker/backpacker in the bunch. Out of those 6 full days, I plan to hike at least 2, maybe 3 days. I know the basic rule of hiking/backpacking is to not go solo. I have some hiking and backpacking experience in my area (South MS). I understand that hiking 5 miles in relatively flat area is not the same as 5 miles in the mountains. I have done some solo ...

I found this place through the Y-net site and very thankful for the work that's been put into this site. I am a tech rep for a major camera manufacturer and stay on the road quite a bit, but my territory is the SE US- so Yellowstone is a once a year trip. With this site, I am sure GSMNP will be a once a month thing

I have recently relocated to Franklin, NC from Southern Idaho, and am looking for some great places to go and do some wildlife photography. Especially Black Bear photography. Any help and direction to go from where I'm at would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. I look forward to conversing with all of you!

Three of us spent 2 nights at campsite #13 just down from Gregory Bald on June 29-30. After two dayhikes to see the azaleas in each of the last two years, I wanted to go up there and have an entire day to just wander around (or lay around!) and soak it all up. Mission accomplished!

We didn't get on the Gregory Bald trail out of Sam's Gap on Parsons Branch Road until almost 6PM. Then about halfway up one of our group who was out ahead of the other two rounded a bend and startled mama bear ...

No....not really a praying bear!! This shot was taken in Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mtns. NP. I spent almost 1 1/2 hours watching this sow black bear and her 3 cubs!! They were all in the tops of the 2 big cherry trees on the side of Hyatt Lane eating wild cherries. It was an awesome experience and I thank God for sharing it with me. Finally someone else saw them and in just a few moments there was a huge crowd of people, which made the bears very nervous and they came down from the trees ...

The Loop Road was open to car traffic this morning (normally closed until 10:00am on Wednesdays and Saturdays for bicycles). As usual there were few folks at the gates, waiting on the Rangers for the sunrise unlocking.

Tons of wild turkey (counted over 50) and the whitetail were grazing everywhere, we noticed many females that ...
